You came to Costa Rica because you love its abundant diversity of flora and fauna which is almost unique in the whole world? Now, you have some days to discover the Costa Ballena and need some advice for trips and activities?
Here are our top 3 activities for nature lovers:
1. Parque Nacional Corcovado
The county’s most spectacular variety of wildlife can be found in Corcovado National Park which has been called “the most biologically intense place on Earth” by National Geographic. Many endangered species like jaguars, tapirs, ocelots and even the extremely rare Quetzal can be seen on a tour with a professional guide. Officially more than 400 species of birds, 100 species of butterflies and about 40 species of frogs form part of the park’s fauna. With its lowland rain forest, highland cloud forest, mangroves and beaches, Corcovado is the perfect place for hiking, as well. Four main ranger stations in the park create a net of varied trails one can walk to discover the area. Booking a professional tour guide is always recommended as riptides, snake or insect bites and river crossings should never be underestimated while hiking.
2. Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary
From Tuesday to Sunday you can visit the Villas Alturas Sanctuary to do a 1.5 hour tour through the center, seeing a large variety of exotic animals which were brought there to be rehabilitated and released, later on. Some of them became victims to illegal domestication or were involved in car accidents on the highways. Others are orphaned babies whose parents can no longer take care of them. Therefore they are raised by the rescue center’s staff to prepare them for an independent life in the jungle. This place probably offers the best chance to come as close to Costa Rica’s wild animals as nowhere else in the area and at the same time you help to maintain the sanctuary by donating an admission as it is a non-profit organization that depends on animal lovers and volunteers.
3. Horseback riding at Playa Uvita
The best way to start a day at the beach is to see the beautiful sunrise with its bright colors in the impressive scenery of Uvita’s Whale’s Tales. Having a small breakfast with exotic fruits and Gallo Pinto gives your trip a typical cultural touch. Afterwards you can book a horseback riding tour with one of the numerous providers in Bahía to enjoy an extraordinary experience while riding next to the see and feeling the sea spray on your skin. If you like to relax and refresh after the ride, just take your bathing suit and a towel to spend some hours in the shadow of the palms with a good book.
