poisonous snake costa ricaThere are 139 species of snakes in Costa Rica, from which 22 are poisonous.
To prevent a snake bite you should be careful when inserting hands into holes, under rocks, when collecting fruit etc. In case you find a snake, do not manipulate it and simply back away.
If bitten, you should immobilize the affected limb, stay calm, call 911 and take the person immediately to the nearest health centre. Do not apply creams, herbs or chemicals, do not use tourniquets or ligatures, also do not suck out the venom by mouth or cut the wound.
The bite area should also not be washed because venom on the skin can help to identify the snake.
